Turing's Life During the War
Life at Blechley ParkWhat happened at BLechley park was one of the best kept secrets of WWll.
From code breakers to the message and typing girls, all were sworn to secrecy. It was kept for meany years before the information was released to the public. Many of the people who worked to break the code died before being recognized by the public, including Turing. |
Relationship with Joan ClarkeJoan Elizabeth Lowther Clarke was a fellow cryptanalyst and codebreaker who worked with Turing in Hut 8 during WWII at Bletchley park.
Clarke was "incredibly intelligent", according to Kerry Howard, a researcher devoted to looking at the lives of women codebreakers in WWII. "She came from a very academic and intelligent family. Her family were religious scholars and her father was the Canon Residentiary of Chichester Cathedral who wrote a lot of books. We know that she was encouraged in her studies," Howard told IBTimes UK. "I think she was quite awkward in social situations. I recently spoke to her old neighbour who said she was very warm but never spoke about her past or background. I don't think anybody really knows who the real Joan Clarke was. She was a very secret, very private lady." Joan Clarke and Turing were very close in the time they spent together breaking the German enigma code. Both very intelligent people, they bonded over their love of mathematics and desire to break the code. Turing proposed to mrs. Clarke during their time spent together but he did not go through with the wedding because he chose to embrace his true self, which ment admitting that he was homosexual. |
Breaking the CodeAlan Turing did not act alone when breaking the code. There were many brilliant minds that were working together to saves lives, and win WWll.
