From 1945 to 1947, Turing lived in Hampton, London while he worked on the design of the ACE (Automatic Computing Engine) at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL). He presented a paper on 19 February 1946, which was the first detailed design of a stored-program computer.
In 1948, Turing was appointed Reader in the Mathematics Department at the University of Manchester. In 1949, he became Deputy Director of the Computing Laboratory there, working on software for one of the earliest stored-program computer.
He also invented theLU decompositionmethod in 1948,used today for solving matrix equations
Turing's death:
Turing died on June 7, 1954. It was determined that the cause of death was cyanide poisoning. The remains of an apple were found next to the body, though no apple parts were found in his stomach. The autopsy reported that "four ounces of fluid which smelled strongly of bitter almonds, as does a solution of cyanide" was found in the stomach. The smell of bitter almonds was also reported in vital organs. The autopsy concluded that the cause of death was asphyxia due to cyanide poisoning and ruled a suicide.
Turing's arrest:
Homosexuality was illegal in the United Kingdom in the early 1950s. So when Turing admitted to police, who he called to his house after a break-in, in January, 1952, that he had had a sexual relationship with 19-year-old Arnold Murray, he was charged with gross indecency. Following his arrest, Turing was forced to choose between probation on the condition that he receives hormonal treatment, or imprisonment. He chose hormonal treatment, and soon underwent chemical castration through injections of a synthetic estrogen hormone for a year.
Turing's affect on today's society:
Alan Turing has made many choices and discovers that have affected today's society. for example, he is he father of computer science, which basically mean he invented the idea of computers and computer science. He also left a mark by choosing to embrace his homosexuality. He has given bravery and hope to the LGBT community.
